Underground talks creepers with Alex Mullins

Posted in Interview by undergroundshoes on December 16, 2010

We were lucky enough to meet the super talented graduate and menswear designer Alex Mullins to talk about his recent success and his plans for this year. The Central Saint Martins runner up has had plenty of attention following his incredibly distinctive, playful menswear collection. He is now completing his Masters at the Royal College of Art..we can’t wait to see what he produces this year. Definitely one to watch.

Underground caught up with Alex to talk Menswear, Style and Creepers….

You used Underground Creepers for your Graduate show- how did that work for you? I started drawing the collection with brother creepers as it was really fitting to what I was feeling at the time. I had always initially thought about using creepers and my initial ideas always had creepers in them. I guess I just love the stomping and strong impact they have, it adds a lot of attitude to their character. If they were wearing plimsolls I don’t think it would have had the same impact!

Tell me about your last collection–what were the inspirations and ideas for that:A lot of it was about stature, swagger, and masculinity of teddy boys. I wanted the shape of the Trousers to be worn, loose around the knees so they looked like they had been worn for a very long time. In my line up I wanted each outfit to be a different character of the same unity. I wanted them to wear moulded felt bobble hats but when I saw them all lined up, I realised they all looked like gnomes! I found the paintbrush in the print room and decided to use it as it looked like the man had a fringe! Then I made up symbols and simple shapes for each character!

What do you like about Underground?

My favourite are the pistachio creepers! When you are looking for something different for a guy, it’s hard. I like the new take on something classic, which I feel is so important in menswear. It’s refreshing to see people not throwing away old ideas and re inventing something that is well made. I love the fact Underground is a British brand, I’m very patriotic!

Underground & Imelda May

Posted in Interview by undergroundshoes on December 9, 2010

Underground were lucky enough to interview the unbelievable Irish talent, Imelda May last week whilst on tour, supporting Meatloaf. Some of you may not recognise the name, but to many you will know she is already a superstar. Dressed in rolled up jeans, green creepers and a fur leopard print jacket, she openly chats about her biggest achievements so far, her love for performing and her distinctive 50’s style…

What has been your biggest achievement so far?

I’ve done loads of things I never thought I’d do, just doing well I suppose. I’ve been performing since I was 15 so just doing well is my biggest achievement and sticking with it. Jeff Beck asking me to sing on his album, I was absolutely knocked out-so delighted to get to sing with Jeff. I recently recorded with Lou Reed, I’ve performed at the Royal Albert Hall, I’ve been on the grammy’s..there is absolutely loads!

The biggest achievement for me would be sticking to my guns, having the guts to leave the band that I was in, and starting completely from scratch, just going for it when I was told that I would never do well on my own. It could have gone really badly or really well, but I thought this is it, I’m really going for it and I did!

Who would you like to see in a pair of creepers?

My whole band is next on the list! I’ve had a lot of comments about my green creepers so Meatloaf may have his eye on them haha! David Cameron! Maybe people would listen to him more if he wore a cool pair of shoes!
