Slot Machine Rock Undergound

Hold the press, one of the biggest rock bands – in Thailand - Slot Machine made their way to concept store ActuallyActually, Singapore for an interview. The four piece band who gained fame through their 2007 hit “Phan” all ended up purchasing Underground shoes during the hour long interview.

UPDATE Chanels Creeper is a Tumblr Fake

Well… there seems to be a development within this story, shortly – in fact almost immediately! - after posting this we received an email from someone called Navneet Gill (who says his two favorite things in life are Creepers and Chanel) saying that the image was taken from the series “in bloom” by female photographer Moni Haworth. She is the photographer behind the cult blog “johnnys bird,” which features shoots documenting a rock n roll, 90s revival within todays youth culture.  

So now the mystery is… who teamed the image up with Chanel to make the advert?! And how long do you think it will be before Chanel attempts to replicate our triple sole Creeper? ;)

Chanels Creeper is a Tumblr Fake

You may have seen this image doing the works around Tumblr over the past few months. But here at Underground HQ we can confirm that the image is not all that it seems. From first glance it appears that legendary fashion house Chanel has picked the triple sole Creeper to center a recent advert for their Madrid Store but after chatting to the guys within Chanel’s UK press office they have confirmed our suspicions. The image is not by them at all, nor are any of the clothes pictured.

So the search goes on, this recent development has only intrigued us more, who’s is it? and why was it done?

DEVON HALFNIGHT LEFLUFY

Devon Halfnight LeFlufy is a Canadian born designer, who has lived and worked in Montreal, New York and now, Antwerp. Devon has honed his craft interning with Maria   Cornejo, Denis Gagnon and now under Walter Van Beirendonck at the Royal Academy of Antwerp.  Devon is also a two time recipient of the prestigious Fondation de la Mode de Montreal Scholarship.  “Burn the sage”, his latest  collection is informed by a Native American technique of cleansing by burning sage, combined with Devon’s continuing experimentation with treatments and textures.  Juxtaposing hand oxidized embroidery with fine wools, destroyed leathers with delicately hand dyed cottons and metal shaped by a Belgian blacksmith with soft black pony skin Devon builds his unguarded, concise take on menswear. Though still in school Devon’s capsule collections have been sold beside brand such as Alexander Wang, Bless, Gareth Pugh,and Rick Owens.  Select pieces from “Burn the sage” can be purchased at the internationally renowned RA13 concept boutique in Antwerp.  Devon is also known for is ongoing collaboration with Swedish photographer Erika Rodin who is the creative force behind the beautiful analogue pictures that accompany Devon’s Work.  With many exciting projects and collaborations in the near future  Devon Halfnight LeFlufy is a young talent to watch.

Johnny Comet -Walking Talking Creeperpedia

One of my favourite work friends is our legendary Johnny Comet -he is responsible for the naming of the shoes including the Wulfrun, Hacienda and Apollo amongst others - he looks after some of the international celeb private clients -but above all he is this walking , talking encyclopedia of everything that are Underground Creepers.  Just ask him single sole, double sole, triple sole, which animal print ? leopard or tiger ?, d rings or buckle ? , with interlace apron or without ?, contrast binding or contrast keepers ?, who wears which style and which is is favourite commissioned pair ?. If creepers is your thing he will keep you entertained for hours. I asked him to do an interview for the blog and he refused , when i suggested a photo for the blog he gave me that look that celebs give to the papz when they stalk them. I suggested that we have an Ask Johnny page on the website , he thought about it and refused.  I felt like some fifties college girl swooning over a heartthrob rock n roll idol- he was just so out of my league.  Anyhow he  tells me (in that “we can always be friends” type way )to ask him if I need to know anything about creepers so I guess Johnny is my own personal Creeper-pedia. Oh Johnny !

mugler x underground SS12

You know how it is when you have that funny feeling that you know you have forgotten to do something but cant remember what it is . Well when I posted about mugler x underground for this season I had one of those funny feelings that I had forgotten to do something- That was it  i forgot to post about mugler x underground for SS 12  – well better late than never and I guess you dont need to wait so long for them to be in store. You will be able to catch them at Oki ni in the UK, IT in Hong Kong, Mid West in Tokyo and Joyce in Beijing and Shanghai amongst others.

Bodgies and Widgies-Tell me more

I’ve just been preparing some information for the Marketing team that asked for some history of the Underground brand and the Underground counter culture. The usual mantra of Research, Research comings heading my way. I guess there can be worse things to do than googling the day away. Anyway I came across the Bodgies and Widgies and thought that I had to post about them- the name is enough to warrant a post.

Bodgies and Widgies originated in 1950’s Australia and New Zealand as an antipodean Teddy Boy Culture amongst working class teenagers.  The guys were called Bodgies and the girls called Widgies .With a background that could be traced back to World War Two when Australian seamen impersonated Americans, the Bodgies and Widgies could be seen around the Kings Cross milk bars kitted out in moccasins, drapes and blue jeans. Fuelled by a sensationalist media most law abiding citizens saw these teenagers as an undisciplined  mob that had been corrupted by  comics, horror movies and rock and roll music.(corrupted eh !! )  The boys grew their hair long and the girls had their hair cut short, creating almost as much outrage as their “delinquent behavior. This was the new generation that wanted to mix it up and fused an immediate post war austerity with the prosperity that was to follow.
